Individualized care to enrich the lives of our guests

Daily schedules at Adult Day Services are designed to enrich the lives of our guests and help them maximize their full potential. Activities utilize a holistic approach to well-being in mind, body, and spirit based on the Six Dimensions of Wellness developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute. The Six Dimensions of Wellness include:

  1. Emotional well-being recognizes the importance of expressing and accepting one’s thoughts and feelings.
  2. Intellectual and cognitive stimulation engage the “mind muscle” to continue working and stretching to retain function.
  3. Occupational or life skills and the pursuit of hobbies or personal interests provide a sense of purpose.
  4. Physical activity, such as chair aerobics and movement therapy, provides strengthening and conditioning and promotes coordination and balance.
  5. Social interaction builds relationships with other guests and staff and helps prevent feelings of isolation.
  6. Spiritual awareness engages the individual’s search for the “meaning of life” through meditation, taking an inventory of one’s personal history, or religious reflections.

Today, many professionals in the wellness field now recognize a seventh dimension of wellness:

Environmental interaction and sensory stimulation encourage continued engagement with not only their immediate surroundings, but with the world.

These seven dimensions of wellness provide the framework for our life enrichment activity programs at Oakland Centre.

A typical day’s programming will include a variety of these elements to provide the opportunity for our guests to achieve their optimum level of functioning and ensure that their days are filled with purpose and meaning.
